Interlocking Driveways

Interlocking Driveway

Why should NorthStead build your Interlock driveway?

Base preparation is fundamental for a long-lasting interlock driveway, a process NorthStead excels in through our innovative custom screed system. Our method of grading the entire driveway as a whole using specialized screed poles, guarantees optimal slope for water runoff. This will also avert water pooling issues near your home.

Unlike outdated approaches by some local companies, like using a piece of lumber to grade in sections. This will lead to uneven slope over the totality of your driveway. Before selecting a contractor, inquire about their construction techniques and expected quality standards.

Use of proper aggragates in the sub-base equals longevity

Using the correct aggregate in your sub-base is crucial for supporting the weight of your vehicles and to ensure the best compaction. We use larger aggregate with 3″ chucks of stone verses our competitors 1/2″ stone. For the bedding layer just before laying bricks it’s important to know that more than an 1.25″ is too much. If a contractor uses more than 1.25″ of the finer bedding material you’re risking loss stablity in the brick leading to extreme tire ruts. We also use a 1/4″ inch chipped aggregate for our bedding material verses our competitors “stonedust”. The difference is simple stonedust holds water and water is what causes excessive rutting and premature paver deterioration.

Another mistake we see from other contractors is not extending the base far enough past the edge of the driveway. Not only is it important to be able to nail the paver edging along side the brick but, if the base is not extended far enough the bricks can sink latterally. This is usually caused when a vehicle drives off the edge of the driveway.

Stability using Geotextile Fabric and Understanding Joint Sand vs. Polymeric Sand

At NorthStead, we advocate for geotextile fabric in most driveways for enhanced stability and uniform weight distribution from vehicles. This fabric acts as a protective barrier between native soil and subbase aggregates, mitigating the risk of rutting or uneven settling.

Understanding the distinction between joint sand and polymeric sand is pivotal. While joint sand offers a cost advantage, it can erode in wet conditions. Although pricier, polymeric sand’s adhesive properties help prevent erosion, weeds, and insect intrusion. Steps

Steps

Looking for steps for your entrance?

Experience in Stair Construction

The skills for creating practical stairs from scratch has been honed from years of experience. We’ve learned the importance of using large single slabs for steps instead of smaller blocks which can move independently. This ensures that the steps remain stable and settling evenly in the face of Northern Ontario’s freeze and thaw cycles.

Consistency in Step Heights

It’s important to know that each consecutive step needs to be at a consistant height. One step in the middle that is either too high or too low may become a tripping hazard. There is a minimum 5″ and a maximum 8″ step height and you need a step slope to shed water. When you combine that with your overall height it’s like trying to hit a moving target. Your contractor needs to be contantly checking heights for each installed step in order for the last step fall in place.

The stair tread is where you place your foot on top of the step. Most contractors install the simple coping stones with a tread depth of only 12″. We like to install a step with at least 14″ tread depth giving you adequate area to plant your entire foot. This extra depth is beneficial when you have snow build up on your step you still have space for your boots.

When steps heights exceed 24″, you may need aluminum railings or privacy walls, which can attach to concrete or stone stairs. In certain situations, railings could be replaced with flower beds or retaining walls to bridge the 24″ gap. Either way we have deal with pretty much every senario when it comes to entrances. We would be more than happy to help you make these hard decisions easier.

Quality and Attention to Detail

We offer a variety of materials to choose from, including concrete block, composite wood, granite, flagstone and natural stone. When it comes to picking materials colours it’s easier when the contract knows what you want and that comes experience dealing with brick suppliers. Every contractor will builds steps differently using the same materials. You want to be sure you are getting the right contractor that knows all the details. With NorthStead, you can be confident that your project will be of the highest quality. At NorthStead, we believe in taking the extra steps to make your project look great. Remember it doesn’t cost more to make your project look good, it’s choosing the right company.

Decks

Vinyl Fencing & Composite Decks

Deck construction that suits your needs

NorthStead designs and builds composite decks with a focus on quality and longevity. As an experienced deck builder, we use materials that are more durable than what other companies offer, such as composite, aluminum or vinyl instead of traditional wood that can rot or warp. For decks composite decking also provides added sturdiness and longevity compared to a standard deck boards. With composite deck boards you don’t see any screws or fastners which, gives your deck a cleaner look. We fasten the boards using undermount clips to eliminate any chance of stepping on protruding screws.

Aluminum railings are long lasting and go well with composite decking. We use pre-engineered railings for easy installation and stronger alternative to wood. Unlike wood aluminum railings don’t require painting and they will not deteriorate. Railings come in a range colours that can be matched to your home or deck.

NorthStead also can build for privacy walls and gazebos that add shade and cuclusion to your outdoor living area. We can order a prefab structure or custom build to your requirements.

3D Renderings help visualize the project

To help you visualize your deck before work begins, we use 3D rendering technology to create a virtual environment. Utilizing these renderings enables easy alterations and provides a more precise cost estimate for materials. Furthermore, we use the renderings as drawings to obtain necessary permits from the municipality.

At NorthStead, we always make safety a top priority. That’s why we ensure all decks adhere to code, guaranteeing proper construction and ensuring the deck’s safety for entertaining guests. The local building inspector will inspect the project during various stages of construction to ensure that everything is up to code.

Vinyl Fencing & Gates

For fencing options include vinyl, aluminum, and composite. With the cost of wood continuing to rise, choosing these alternative fences makes more sense. These materials require minimal maintenance and are resistant to rot, warping, and insects, unlike traditional wood fences. Simply clean them and enjoy their beauty without the need for painting or staining.

We can build these fences to your specifacations adding single or double gates which, include powdered coated hindges and hareware. Typically before installation some properties require leveling or grading which helps with water drainage issues. We have the equipment to regrade your property so that the fence can trend on consistent slope instead of stepping down each panel.

Retaining Walls

Retaining Walls

Don’t let your retaining wall become a dam

Concrete block or natural stone?

We have the expertise and equipment to build any type of retaining wall from natural stone to large concrete blocks. Our walls are built using pre-engineered blocks and designed to last. It’s important to note that blocks are rated for specific heights. Exceeding this rating can lead to instability. Retaining walls can also be customized to include steps, if needed. We work with a variety of materials, including limestone, granite, boulders, and concrete block.

Retaining walls along side driveways can be tricky because you have the added weight of vehicles. If the retaining wall is above a driveway it could be hit by plows or damaged from water run off. It’s usally best to have a buffer area between a driveway and the neighbouring wall to allow for drainage and the area can be used to stage plants or shrubs. It’s best to find a contractor that can spot potential problems areas and can provide alternative solutions to these situations.

Waterfront breakwalls

If you’re planning a waterfront project, we can help. With extensive experience collaborating with the Mattawa Conservation Authority, we actively assist in securing the necessary permits for your project. We have a diverse range of natural stone options for break walls on waterfront properties. Natural stone is a pricer option but a requirement when dealing with water. Nothing last longer in water than a piece of the Canadian shield.

In areas with harsh freeze-thaw cycles like northern Ontario, using the proper blocks is essential to ensure the retaining wall remains sturdy. If there is clay present then the use of a ridge foam insulation may be required to prevent frost heaving. Our walls include an extra-wide base, geogrid reinforcement every second course to tie these rows back into the existing slope. We also use a geo-textile fabric in the sub-base to ensure minimal settle and maximum stability.

Backfilling and water drainage

Backfilling is also crucial when building a retaining wall. Using a material that won’t hold water is important. Retaining walls that hold back water can fail due to the extra weight created by water damming. Knowing whether you’ll require drainage tile behind the wall or an outdoor sump pit for excessive water issues is crucial. Improper construction could be the cause if you’re experiencing issues with your retaining wall, such as leaning or pushing out. Don’t hesitate to contact NorthStead for assistance.

Sodding & Seeding

Sodding & Seeding

Sodding vs Seeding

Natural grass, either through sodding or seeding, is a more traditional choice. Seeding is the most cost-effective option, but it takes a month to care for and grow into a mature lawn. On the other hand, sod provides instant lawn, but it’s more expensive and requires a well-maintained irrigation system to survive.

For the perfect yard we strip out the old layer of sod and haul away. We do this only when the existing lawn has problems or we can simply mulch the lawn with our hydra-bucket. Once the lawn is removed or mulched we are left with usual organics materials. In some cases there may be too much topsoil creating dam areas and somtimes there’s no top soil just sand. We need to address this either way by triaging the existing materials and taking corrective action.

Steps for the perfect lawn

We start by shaping the lawn’s sub base usally sandy mix of topsoil this ensures proper drainage and everthing needs to slope away from all buildings. At the same time the shaping process firms up the ground using the weight of our grading equipment.
We can only spread the topsoil once the sub base is shaped. It’s important to determine beforehand whether sod or seed will be used because it affects the height of the finished grade. Sod, being thick, needs specific consideration when laying it along sidewalks or driveways for proper water shed.

Natural or artificial turf

If you’re looking for professional sodding, you have two main options: natural grass or artificial turf. Both have their own advantages and disadvantages.

Artificial turf, although it’s the most expensive option, is low-maintenance and always looks good. It comes with a long-lasting warranty 8 years and is a great choice for pet owners. It’s also an eco-friendly solution as it doesn’t require any water.

Drainage solutions

NorthStead Landscaping can help you with any issues you may be having with your lawn, such as water pooling. Downspouts that spew water which can be hazardous especially if the water has no where to go. We can run your downspouts into a french drain deep enough underground preventing frost from entering causing pipes to freeze.

We can remove your old sod and regrade your old lawn to ensure proper drainage. For a professional and lush lawn, consider working with NorthStead Landscaping. We have the expertise to make your outdoor space beautiful and functional.

In addition, our skid steers come with a variety of attachments, including a post hole auger, concrete breaker, and hydra-bucket, which enable us to mulch sod and grade lawns efficiently. The excavator is perfect for digging ditches, constructing boulder retaining walls, and building natural stone steps.

Road construction

If you need a private road constructed on soft or swampy ground, our experienced team can help. To build driveways or roads through swamps, we have used the “Corduroyd road” construction method. Using trees that you need to have removed will help save on the aggregate cost and disposal fees. This involves the technique of placing logs perpendicular to the direction of the road over a low swampy area and coupling them with geotextile fabric and new aggregates to create a strong road.

Driveway Grading
